NYSSCA Pre-Conference for Graduate Students and New Counselors
This one day professional development workshop precedes the NYSSCA conference and is designed for school counseling graduate students, recent graduates, and new counselors. School counselors serve a vital role in maximizing student’s academic achievement, personalsocial adaptation, and career development. Professional counselors must balance their various roles as clinicians, coordinators, consultants, advocates, and leaders. The goals of the workshop are not only to provide students and recent graduates with strategies for obtaining employment, but to also establish a foundation upon which to build meaningful careers as effective professionals. The workshop will address various early career issues such as:
(a) the transition from the role of graduate student to professional school counselor
(b) job hunting and creating employment opportunities
(c) resume writing & interview strategies
(d) establishing your professional roles in the new position
(e) resources and information for new and emerging counselors
(f) planning & building your career path in school counseling
Be sure to bring a copy of your resume and sample cover letters since there will be opportunities for a practicing professional to review them. There will also be opportunities to practice your skills in mock interviews. Program details are subject to change.
NYSSCA College Counseling Pre-Conference 2010
As national and state policy makers sharpen their focus on outcome measures in assessing the efficacy of P-16 education, the role of school counseling in effectively transitioning all learners to post-secondary outcomes becomes increasingly critical. This preconference will assist school counselors in enhancing their college counseling skills to maximize student success. ASCA Vice President for Secondary Schools and NEACAC immediate Past President, Bob Bardwell will deliver our keynote, “College Admissions 2010: The Good, the Bad or the Ugly.” We’ll continue the discussion with a presentation on how to incorporate NYSSCA/ASCA Model-based outcome measures in effective college counseling programs. The morning concludes with a panel of college admissions officers, giving participants an opportunity to hear from and question colleagues from “the other side!” A full luncheon is included in this preconference. The afternoon will be spent visiting area colleges and meeting with admissions staff. This college tour is only open to paid participants in the college counseling preconference. Certificates of Attendance will be issued by NYSSCA for this full-day training. Program details are subject to change.
